“A steering wheel don't mean you can
drive, a warm body don’t mean I'm alive”
A week ago, I was at a Switchfoot concert
right here in Cambridge. Amazing!
Firstly, because I didn’t expect such a big
band to come to tiny venue in a little town for just about 600+ people. The
place was smaller than the TN hall back in boarding school.
Secondly, they were
great. The music was electrifying, and the lyrics stimulated the soul. Melissa
Kong, who stood beside me throughout the night (and who had come all the way
from Oxford to see these guys), commented that “[the lead singer] was so
charismatic!” I know these words sound really cheesy, but I think you couldn’t
have disagreed if you were there yourself. Jon Foreman sang not only with
style, but he really meant every word he said. And you could tell that he
really wanted us to be thinking about them:
I walked out inspired. I walked out feeling
like I wanted to get up and make the most of my life. Be the best me I could
possibly be.
Now if you know Switchfoot songs, they don’t
really tell you to do anything. The
words don’t prescribe a plan of action. They just get you wondering about
whether or not you’re where you want to be, whether you’re where you could and
should be.
I’ve been listening to quite a bit of their
music this past week, and there’s one song that has particularly stuck. The
quote above is a line from its chorus. Have a listen if you can find 5 minutes:
Have we been living alive?
I wanna thrive, not just survive.
